Simple problem, looking for most efficient solution

I have two desktops i would like internet for, but access to only one Ethernet cable.

50 feet away is a comcast cable modem hooked up to a 4 port wireless router. My landlord uses one of the ports, and I live in a basement with two other tenants.

I bought a 50 foot cable to run to my room a while ago for desktop#1, is there any way i can get both desktops hooked up without buying a 5 port router and another 50 foot cable? wireless is unreliable in the basement.

I am not 100% sure about what a switch does, could i persay run the 50 foot cable to a switch, and then a shorter cable to each of my computers?

Shanks!
