Problem with internet speed.

Hi, I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm having a problem with my internet. I've tried two different routers, but whenever my roommate and I connect to the router either by wireless or ethernet cable our speed immediately bogs down. If only one computer is connected speedtest.net shows that we get around 700-900kb/s which is our advertised speed, but the second we hook up the other computer it goes down to about 70-90kb/s. We've tried multiple routers, and multiple ways of connecting to them. We made sure that both of our computers are just idling when we do this with no background downloads or anything streaming. Any ideas on what could be the problem?
