OK, so today they say they are extending the maintenance schedule to
speed up mail delivery. Excuse me? For the last 3 days the game has
been unplayable. Vendors take 5 minutes to complete a transaction. You
have to spam the Auction House for 15 minutes to get a listing, then
you have to spam a "buy" for 10 minutes before the transaction goes
through. In combat, you get messages like "soandso attempts to run
away in fear" but on the client side, the critter is still standing
there. You can't chase him, because the client thinks he's still
standing next to you. You can't use a ranged attack for teh same
reason. So, just stand by to be swarmed by all the other mobs in the
area. There's nothing you can do about it.

The list goes on. Fix the mail? They need to fix their damned
database, because that's what's causing these horrible sync problems.
I don't know if it's just horribly overloaded, in which case they need
to upgrade their servers, or if the database is just hosed beyond
belief.

OK, I'll cut them some slack on this. They probably underestimated the
load.

But what I won't cut them any slack on is the patch process. In TWO
HOURS I have downloaded 6 MB of a 61 MB patch. WTH, did I wake up this
morning and it's 1985? Because we're talking 2400 baud rates... which
would actually make it 1982. Actually, 3 MB an hour is half what I
used to get with a 9600 BPS modem, so that makes it 4800 baud.

Whatever. It's not the 80s. Is it?

The situation is getting worse by the second. Today is a total joke.

With respect to your comments about fixing the mail, it reminds me of
the early days of UO when the game was going to hell in a handbasket,
and they came out with a patch and a grand announcement that they
had added SNOW to the game ! Yep--effin snow ! Players couldn't walk
4 feet without rubberbanding back through their brains--but we got
lag-amplifying snow.

Sometimes you just have to question if these devs live in the same
world as everyone else.

Yes... the patch finally downloaded after 7 hours... then it took me
an hour to get logged in. Then I lag-staggerred around for 5
minutes... then I got a "lost connection" message.

I don't get it. I really don't. They obviously have at least a few
talented developers in their employ, I don't know how disasters like
this can be allowed to happen. Do they just not *care* how negative
the experience becomes for their customers?

This isn't about Blizzard not knowing how to make a patch available, this is
about a company that knows that it's so succesful it doesn't *have* to pay
for the bandwidth required to support a million downloads. Instead they
implement a peer-to-peer file sharing scheme that transfers the cost back to
customers and frees the compnay from having to pay for all those downloads.
It's brilliant and a great benefit ... for Blizzard.

Blizzard has lost so much of the glitter off their reputation that is going
to be their true problem down the road. They are being cheap and they
can't hire people to write proper online code. this is no longer a new
game. It has been out like 5 or six months they can't even patch right. it
does not forebode good things to come and it's a nice game.
they deliberately made things simpler and easier so lower end machines could
participate and they can't even do that right. Wish I was well so I could
really raise some hell as I have done in the past. The more money involved
the worse the behavior. By know making a proper working online game should
no longer be a mystery. The same sorry excuse that we didn't know how
p[opular it would be is of course the usual Big Lie. These games are
ordered months in advance of their release and they know how many folks
apply to be beta testers and thing like that. they just aren't going to
stop selling and flooding there servers with more people. Take our money
and use it to fix it what a great way to do business. They should knock
off the monthly fee for a couple of months to try to get some good will
back. It is a really sad situation in and industry of this size.
Everyday it's is some kind of a game effecting problem. Sorry no longer
cuts it!

Hey, nothing to do with the subject, but it's good to see ya! Hope you're
feeling better, or at least OK.
