I have both and to my ears the consumer V6 sounds much, much smoother.
The 7506's have a high end that makes my teeth rattle!!!
Anyone else have both and feel this way?
Just curious.

Dunno about the V6, but my 7506s are great for editing (really show those
harsh bits up), and for testosterone-boosting trouser flapping bass ( keep
make me tearing them off swearing that my stereo speakers are shaking the
house late at night - but they're not switched on).

But most tiresome (almost to the point of unusable) for casual music
enjoyment.

Pretty much agreed. I use HD 580s for listening for pleasure or for
evaluating actual sonic balance. If you work with 7506s, you have to know
the meaning of "translate" and be able to implement it. But that's true of
working with headphones regardless.

I have both and find neither "smooth." I retired the V6 after I got the
7506. I use a Sennheiser HD600 if I want a really good headphone sound.
But, all three hurt my ears after a short time of listening. I use the
V6 plugged into a computer, for the rare occassion where I'm interested
in hearing something coming from it (no sounds otherwise).

Same here.

Agreed for the 7506's, but the V6's are much smoother.
BTW these are a very old set of V6's.
Must be that *vintage* cable that gives it the smooth tube sound :)

RE: Harsher HF.. Me Too!!

I have been using the MDR-V6's since 1989 (on my 3rd set and I BABY them as much as I can!!) to reference mix Live Audio..

I believe that as much as anything the SONY V6-7506 comparison is much like the Shure SM58 vs. Beta58A microphone scenario (** for the Pro Audio types here.. sorry to the others..) I think SONY may have ADDED a "smiley curve" to make the 7506's "zingier & warmer" and then accordingly if used on a Cheaper Audio Device they sound BETTER/BIGGER.. However, when you plug either of them into a $100,000.00 Audio Console I like the SM58 and the V6 both a LOT more!!

Just what I've noticed..

Thanks all;

If i am not mistaken, the 7506 and V6 use exactly the same transducers.

Hey again..

I cannot say for sure (although I do have an Exploded .pdf of the MDR-V6 somewhere I think!!) that the Transducers were or were not the same when I first tried them (maybe 1995~ish) but the two (2) Sets certainly didn't SOUND the same for sure!! V6's were mellower/smoother in the HF..

I would guess that it is possible that one or the other (NOT the V6's I suppose, if the 7506's are worth $20.00++ more Retail) has a better (or perhaps More Precisely Matched) Transducer.. Also, maybe the Original ones ~~ My three (3) pairs are Circa 1989 to 1992~~ really were different.. perhaps NOW all are the same..??

I am generally a pretty inquisitive guy so now I have to try and Find Out!! Unfortunately NOT in the near future as way too many things going on, but I am going to see what I can dig up!!

Thanks again all;
Bob ;-)

Well.. I quickly found a 7506 Exploded Parts List View.. the Driver used is p/n: 1-542-491-11 ; DRIVER (040F001P) ** It is VERY handy that you can Buy ANY piece of these, EVEN just the wee screws!!

* * And if you can believe Wikipedia it claims :

" The Sony MDR-V6 was superseded by the Sony MDR-7506 with only minor cosmetic differences and a different frequency response, such as the latter being provided with a gold plated headphone connector and a flat frequency response of 10 Hz to 20,000 Hz instead of the MDR-V6's 5 Hz to 30,000 Hz. The MDR-V6 also costs less than the MDR-7506."

Soon I'll be opening my last NOS set and comparing w/ a new set of 7506's.. but if the part are the same it leaves ONLY the Construction and Cabling to differ.. and that "fancy" Gold Plated Adapter.. Hmmmmm...

:whistle:
