I received this bizzarre email on a list today. Sound like somebody has
been listening to Faux News too much !

I heard recently that Behringer gear is made in China by Political
prisoners - no shortage of those in a highly populated, highly controlled
country. It explains why their units are so cheap.
The difference is, if the prisoners refuse to work (for no wages) they are
shot!

Wrong. Everyone knows the prisoners are children, stolen from their
families. And they are starved first, then beaten, and then shot. And
then forced to work some more.

There are really only two reasons slave labor is used:
1. Lack of sufficient labor in your local area to produce what you are
trying to make or grow....stuff like the pyramids and the pre-civil war
US plantation system are examples of this.
2. Retribution or punishment to a group of people
Ever since the industrial revolution, it's not made a lot of sense to
use slave labor, it tends to be less than motivated and you have the
feeding/housing/clothing costs associated with that.
Many historians have suggested that mechanized agriculuture would have
put an end to slavery in the US, because it was cheaper.
So in the case of CHINA, they have a labor SURPLUS, tons of people and
not enough jobs (although I hear some localities are seeing labor
shortages).
While there probably is slave labor in China, it's for category 2,
punishment of political prisoners...that doesn't make it right but I
seriously doubt these guys and girls are working at the Behringer
factory.
Given how highly automated many of the Chinese factories are, it makes
even less sense for them to use slave labor for high tech goods,
cheaper to buy machines than to feed, clothe and house people who are
not gonna work as hard because they are not paid and treated badly.
A whole other issue would be the fact that with their labor surplus,
many workers are paid a sub-living wage, but that is starting to happen
right here in the good ole US of A.
Ironically the Walmart worker that needs a 2nd job to make ends meet is
selling the cut price stuff the poor chinese guy/gal is making for next
to nothing.
