Newegg has the 52x24x52 on sale for {$59,99} or I can get the 48x24x48 for {$53.99} both are retail models. Besides the noise level is there any real difference.

about 4 seconds the 52 might be a better choice as firmware updates are more likely for the latest and greatest but in reality lite-on is still issuing updates as far back as for the 32x drive if you want to save a few bux you canalso easily flash the 48x to a true 52x all told the 48x is the best all around value ( I have both drives and have flashed the 48x to 52x and benchmarks are identical for the 2 drives. In native speed modes they are equal in volume and both have acceptable levels imo)

very little.

Ive got a liteon 48x24x48x which ive flashed to 52x speeds, and have done lots of burns at both speeds.

The difference in burn times is close to negligible, considering that lead in and out is the same.
48x is damn fast anyway... and its hard to find media that will do 52x all the way to the end.

The noise level is noticibly louder too, not particularly wellcome given the bugger all difference in burn times.

so buy the 48x, and flash upgrade it to 52x later if you feel like it.

There is only two reasons to buy the LiteOn 52x/24x/52x over 48x/24x/48x.

1. If you want cool 52x/24x/52x speeds printed on your CD-RW
2. If you have $6 to waste

$6 translates to beer money.

enjoy. And dont forget to pick up some halfway decent media so you can do fast 48x burns too.

as a pointer ive had good sucess with EMTEC green 700mb and TDK gold 700Mb CD-R's.

The stores near me all have the LiteOn 48x24x48 at the same price as the LiteOn 52x24x48.

Which is the better drive for generating reliable output? Or is there no difference?

not that much difference but if they are the same price get the 52x
