Last year we got a Sanyo 8100 from Costco. Now we are thinking of getting
another. The question is would the newer phone be exactly the same as last
years or would it be an improved version of the same phone.

It'd be exactly the same except for any firmware updates that may have
occurred in the meantime.
If you want an improved version, you pay a lot more and get
a Sanyo VM4500

Hey, that's not a weird question. I am sure many people have wondered
the same thing in their early life as a cell phone junkie. :-)
You would be getting the exact same phone, except with a newer firmware
update I believe. I think the 8100 had an update recently, so that
would be the difference unless you had your 8100 updated as well.

If you like the 8100 but want a newer phone, wait a couple weeks for the
8200. It will be the successor to the 8100, and a bad ass phone it is.
