I've got two 512 sticks of Kingston pc2100 that Newegg rated at CAS2, and while the machine *will* run with them set at CAS2, it won't shut down properly. It just sits there at a black screen after Windows 2K shuts off. Also, the machine doesn't boot if I change the BIOS memory setting from "normal" to "performance". Would adding heat spreaders to the RAM help? Or would they just get in the way?
Well, there are two trains of thought you could take on this.....
1- If they didn't help at all, would the top memory manufacturers of the world utilize them.....?
2-if your having issues that you think are due to overheating, I would take a look at other more suspicious components... What I am trying to say is,,,, do you really think cooling your ram by maybe a degree or 2 will shut your pc down properly? Or could you add a properly placed case fan and cool it down by 5 degrees...
perhaps you should list more of your pc specs...
your problems could be attributed to anything... power supply, etc etc.. But to answer your questions.. no, memory heat spreaders wont get in your way.
Good Luck,
Rob

Well, the reason I ask is because it only shuts down improperly when the RAM is at CAS 2. So I'm not sure if the ram just can't run at that setting without a heatsink of some kind.
Here's the rest of the system.
1.33 Tbird with a Silverado HS
A7V333
400watt Antec(not a TruePower)
The usual drives: CD, CD-RW, HD
Addon cards: Radeon 8500LE, SB Live, NIC, and 56K
All of it's in a Antec SX840 with a extra 80mm in the HD cage. Temperatures depend on where its at. At home the CPU usualy idles at 45c and the mobo at 28c, when it's in my college dorm the CPU idles at 51-52 and the mobo does 33c. The CPU gains 5c at both locations when gaming. I tried doing CAS2 at home, and never bothered attempting it in the dorm.
maybe the ram you have is just not meant for cas 2, or is it sold and rated at that? Maybe one of the modules is corrupt. Try running mem-test 86. I am no expert on this, but i am doubtful that heat is holding your ram from going from cas 2.5 to cas 2. I know one thing though,, idling at 50 + celsius would throw up a small flag in my eyes... Its not that pressing of an issue, but...

It has been tested and proven that heat spreaders do VERY little in terms of cooling down RAM or helping with stability. The reference made to top manufacturers using them is often because they want to "hide" what kind of chips they use...for example, Corsair have been known to use Samsung chips quite often.
"Hey!! Who's that hiding behind the bush??!...Well Wingding of course!"
I am sure if they wanted to hide the use of certain chips, they would hide it better then putting two removable plates with a paper-clip like device to hold them on. What I said, im sure it helps a bit, but not enough to crash his machine over and over.
