Need some advice on a hard drive for my A7N8X Deluxe board, which supports IDE ATA133, and SATA. This system will mostly be used as a desktop, games, email, office, etc...

I have my eye on the "Maxtor 80G ATA133 7200rpm 8M 6Y080P0 Hydraulic" which is selling for around $180 (Canadian).

From what I understand about my motherboard, I should be getting a hard drive that supports ATA133, and has 8M of buffer cache. Basically, I'm looking at the best/fastest 80Gig ATA133 hard drives and pricing them up. I know that there are some SATA drives out now, but I haven't seen any in Canada (plus they don't seem to be any faster). Anyone have any thoughts on this?

AFAIK there aren't any drives with BOTH ATA133 and 8MB cache. WD has 8MB cache drives and Maxtor has ATA133. The general consensus seems to be that 8MB cache is a better performance boost than ATA133. So I've been buying WD 8MB cache drives.

There's a rumor that WD will be announcing SATA drives at 10,000 RPM. I'm going to hold off on any drive purchases until the dust settles on that.

What do you mean that "AKAIK there aren't any drives with BOTH ATA133 and 8MB cache". From what I can tell, the Maxtor "L0" models have a 2MB cache with ATA/133, the "P0" models have a 8MB cache with ATA/133, and the "M0" models have a 8MB cache with SATA/150.

The drive that now interests me is the Maxtor 6Y080M0 which is a 80G drive that supports SATA/150, has a 8MB cache, and has a rotational speed of 7200RPM (but which I can't find anywhere).

I'd love to wait for some 10,000RPM drives to come out, but I don't have that option :(

thats exactly what I meant

AFAIK = As Far As I Know. Not the gospel truth. Just my knowledge.

Thanks for the updates on the recent availability of the faster/bigger cache drives. I guess I haven't been keeping up with things as closely as I thought. Good luck with your purchase.

Heh, sorry...didn't mean to sound snitty. For some reason I was thinking that AFAIK stood for "as far as I am concerned". Yeah, just ignore my stupidity.
