I have used U47's and a Studio projects C3 on my vocals for my most
recent album...but I was given an M149 recently and I can't get it to
sound good on aggressive vocals??? Any advice??

Thanks

The M149, in my opinion, has a little bit of a "hard" sound and an
overall bright balance. You should compliment it with a warm and fat
sounding mic pre. Try different patterns and mic placement to get the
quality your looking for.

Agreed. Try it in the polar pattern between cardioid and hyper. This is
the closest pattern to your U47 in cardioid setting. That said, I'm not
sure it's the right mic for an "agressive" vocal. But with the right
preamp (try something with iron in it like a DW Fearn) you may get just
what you're looking for.

Hi Ziv.

We get pretty good results using it in conjunction with the Avalon
Vt-737sp, even on agressive vocals.

Get a nice room and don't crowd the mic.

I've never been a fan of the M149. The original M49 is great, along with
the classic U47 and U67, but the modern M149 doesn't have the same vibe.
The lack of transformer probably has a lot to do with it missing the
"classic" sound. I'd say a Neve module with it's transformer and
slightly darker, smoother character may tame it a bit, but I'd rather
just use a different mic.
