Eventually i would say yes.
Parallel ata will die someday... just like the floppy drive LOL.

Anytime soon? NO. I havnt heard a single rumor about SATA optical drives of any sort.
So dont hold your breath... otherwise ur gonna be turning mighty blue! hehe

We can use IDE devices in S-ATA inteface with some sort of adapter, right?

IMO, parallal ATA will die like AT keyboard connector.

One would ASSUME that those P to S adaptors would also work on Optical drives, though i owuldnt bet my life on it as they are a little different in that they use the ATAPI transfer protocol, not plain ATA.

PATA will die, but not for a long time yet!

For optical drives, the utilisation of bandwidth are still far behind hdd, now only a few CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD-ROM use ATA66, Asus is using ATA100 while other still in ATA33. So optical drives are not in crucial position to be shifted to SATA yet. It'll die eventually but not now. I don't think poeple would buy the more expensive SATA optical drives just because of the small cable which the rounded ide cable would function the same. Just my opinion anyway
