Ok, I admit it. I was one of those guys who rushed out and bought a $600 (Canadian) GForce 3 the day it was released. While the card has given me much enjoyment and a degree of admiration from friends, it's becoming obvious that my GF3's days are numbered and I am at the point where I'm considering the purchase of a new card...and my fear in all this is repeating my GF3 experience: hardware that is already too stale for the software it was built to run.
my questions...
1. It seems DOOM III is a make it/break it event for video cards. Would my GF3Ti500/64MB be able to handle this game or would I find myself having to make major quality concessions just to run it?
2. I'm leaning heavily towards a Radeon 9700 (non-Pro), but are the upcoming R350 cards worth postponing for? I'd be very interested in a conscise comparison between it and the R300--I haven't seen much in the way of specs.
3. Ironically, now that DX8 games are finally coming out, the hardware and the GF3's features are no longer really up to the task. Do you think even the Mighty Radeon 9700 Pro will be in the same position when DX9 games show their faces?
4. I plan on running a lower end Athlon solution (XP+2500 possibly) with pc2700DDR. I'm willing to sacrifice some performance for quality, but generally I like to strike a balance. I love games and if it's new, I'll be playing it. What card, given my hardware and game choices, do you think I should go for?
