ok i bought a new pc about 2-3 weeks ago

GA-8pe667 ultra2
2.4 Ghz p4
1 Gb legend ddr2700 (2x512)
80Gb seagate ata100 HDD
dvd drive
optical mouse (super cheap one)
and my old 4Gb Hdd (33 or 66 but it doesn't say on the HDD)

i have the dvd and 80Gb HDD on seperate channels from the main ata connectors.

i put my 4Gb HDD on one of the raid channels (without raid turned on)

well everthing works fine.

EXCEPT

whenever i try to dfragment my 4Gb HDD i hear the drive speed up and then go (pink pink) and stop it does this repeatitively. (the noise does not sound like its broken or anything but it sounds like it is stopping quickly, old and noisy HDD)

well the problem is that whenever it does this the mouse stops responding for about 5-10 sec. also it makes it impossible to Defrag unless i copy everything off it and then back onto it.

it doesn't only do this when i dfrag but it that is the only time i can garentee it will happen every time!!!!.

on shutdown of the pc it does it and occasionally at other times.

HELP ME
it is my first PC ever and i don't know what the hell is going on.

why would the HDD effect the mouse anyway

thanks in advance for any help

As its an old drive making odd noises my first guess would be that it has bad sectors in it, but you dont come accross them until you defrag.

Find out the brand of the old drive.
Go to the manufacturers website.
download and run the manufacturers drive diagnostic utilities and check to see if the drive is ok.

If its ok, come back to us.
If not, low level format using the utility or replace the drive.

ok the brand is seagate.

i went and did the diagnostic you said to do.

one of them (the drive self test) returned this message
Run: 11/02/2003 3:36:30 p.m.

SCSI Drive 1
Model: Disk drive
Serial Number:
Capacity: 4.3 GBytes
Test result: Self-test routine was interrupted by the host with a reset.

my other HDD did this test fine!!!!

the next one ran (the file system test) said that there were errors in the file system and that they needed to be fixed. well i went and did a scan/fix using the tools in winXP and they went fine, however when i went and performed the online test again it said the same thing????

what is going on here is this drive just way over the hill.

why would a drive effect the mouse.

hmmmm. also try checking the cables and how securely they ae connected. then try again.

You could also try unplugging all other drives apart from the HDD and the floppy drive, see if that has an effect.

if it still doesnt work then we have to assume the drive is 'over the hill'
