Laptop connection

Hello,
I have a new laptop & tried to connect my ethernet cable to this as I dont have wireless router but it didnt recognise any connection, what do I need to do...i am a complete novice

make sure there are no device errors showing in Device Manager. If there is an error there, such as "Unknown Device", you need to re-install the network driver from your laptop maker's support website.

If that doesn't fix it, try a new CAT5e ethernet cable, and for best performance, purchase the shortest cable necessary so you don't have "loops" of excess cable laying on the floor.
