OK, I know that asking a serious question in here is stupid, but at least it's likely to get looked at...

Until Yesterday I was happily running Win98SE. so I installed XP, but as I am a lazy a$$hole, I went for an 'Upgrade' install so I didn't have to spend my life re-installing all my software Etc.

I now have everything working fine, but I can't quite get my broadband working. it's a thomson speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem. Thing is, I lost the original CD that came with the package, so I just downloaded the drivers from the ISP's site (prior to XP-ing my machine), and the modem is installed and working fine, and connects quite happily, but I can't browse the web at all, but dodgy P2P stuff (e.g. Kazaa Lite) works fine.

It seems it can't find a DNS server or something, but as far as I know it's all set up exactly the same as it was - my flatmate has a laptop with the stuff installed that I can compare with.

Any ideas?

Recycle your Cable modem by unplugging it & re plugging it. XP will get the connection by DHCP that way. You can hot plug it.

It could be a service/option in Windows.
Goto Control panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and check through all of them. (Get rid of useless crap while you're at it)

It could also be your Windows connection(s) config.

thanks for the responses..

I've tried Plugging/Unplugging, uninstalling/re-installing, reboots etc.. I still have the same problem

As far as can tell all the Networking stuff is the same as it was - and same as the flatmate's XP laptop. (I'm always having to mess with that sort of stuff at work, so I'm fairly confident with it).

I'll have a look at killing unnecessary services etc later on though, thanks.

Is it only your web browser that won't work? Which one are you using? Have you tried multiple browsers? Can you check e-mail?

If you can do some stuff with it, it leads me to believe that it's a browser issue, and not a hardware issue with your modem...

That's what I thought, but mozilla (& Kazaa Lite's built-in browser, not that I've ever actually used it before) both give the same problems, and e-mail also doesn't work.

most Perplexing. I've installed a few XP systems and not had this problem, but I've never tried upgrading like this before. I might just say to hell with it and format the fcuker, but I'll try to find an original CD first...

It's annoying, because apart from this, everything else is peachy.

Do you go straight from ADSL modem to network card, or do you go through a router?

It a USB ADSL modem, so it's neither of them.

The only thing I've changed is the OS (98SE -> XP Pro), and in doing I had to re-install the modem drivers, but I didn't have the original install CD (no idea where it's gone), but I did have just the drivers for the modem, which I installed and it seems ok.

like I said, straight P2P stuff works, but no browsers seem able to resolve URLs into IP addresses, which makes me think that all I need is Some DNS server addresses.

The ISP is "BT Openworld"... But any idea if I can just use another ISP's DNS servers? I tried the ones we have for our Demon account at work, to no avail.
