I work for a large organization which is actively replacing Windows XP with
Linux desktops. We have started using Open Office and I can't believe how
good it is. I think my next PDA will either be Linux based or have Linux
interoperability. Palm need to provide Linux drivers or better still Linux
enable the Palm OS if it's to survive the Pocket PC.

Well done! The penguin will be proud.

Palm can survive in the world of Pocket PC's with or without good Linux
compatibility. What they need to realise is that many users stick with Palm
to avoid the tyranny of Micro$o£t. So would it not make perfect sense for
Palm Desktop to support Linux?

Linux can talk quite happily to Palm machines as things are, so I'm not
sure I see any need for drivers!
It might be nice if Palm included something in the manuals for machines
about how to connect to Linux, but since the relevant stuff seems to be
included in all the main Linux distros it doesn't need any more than
that!
In fact, the fact that you need no more than your standard distro CD's
to communicate with your Palm, rather than having to load more stuff
onto a Windows machine, is surely enough recommendation on its own!

And we just made it better. Now syncronizing your Palm on Linux,
Unix, and OSX machines just got 6x faster, with a little help from libusb.

I've written dozens of detailed HOWTOs on almost every aspect of
Palm-on-Linux communications. Check out some of the most-popular ones at:

Agreed, and with at least 3-dozen PIM/desktop/sync alternatives
on Linux and Unix systems, the flexibility and choice becomes more clear,
once you steer away from the "boxed-in" model of Microsoft.

I'm running Mandrake 10 on a laptop - palm syncing was impressively fast
(certainly faster than via Windows)! I suspect that already includes
the library in question.

There isn't a link there to the USB HOWTO, though it's listed in the
text.
And I still think it would be good for Palm to include material in their
manuals. I know Linux people tend to pop out and find the info on the
net - but the half dozen lines of text it would take to tell a new Palm
user how to set up synchronisation on Linux would surely be worth it!

And it would be one more marketing plus on the side of the box!
