seems to be in decent shape, but tapes stop playing half way through.
sometimes the fast forward stops too.

is it worth reparing these machines

That depends on the cost of repair. But if you need and use a cassette
recorder, you won't find a much better machine than Tascam 122.

I have one (MkII) and love it. I have a large collection of cassettes and
sometimes prefer to listen to them. Sometimes the sound of CDs just doesn't
feel right.
