I need help with figuring out *what* I need as far as the kind of components.
Here's what I want to do:
Connect audio equipment (keyboards, cassettes) to the machine to record and edit;
Connect video equipment (cameras, VCRs, videogame consoles) to store and edit;
Graphic design
Since the machine won't be used to play videogames (at least with 3D graphics), I'm pretty sure I don't need a graphics card, or a higher end card. I just need something for video (can get big) and 2D images (not too big).
The real question is about components with the inputs for the stuff I want to connect to.
I'm aiming for a system costing no more than around a grand including monitor, DVD writer/CD writer (probably combo, unless I shouldn't), and of course the processor (P4, probably 1.6A or 1.8A), mobo (Soyo Dragon Ultra), RAM (maybe 256-512 or something in-between), and all the fixins (case, power, keyboard, ect)
So what can you tell me?
Your actually the ideal customer for a Dell. You know enough about computers to spec out what you need (P4 1.8 with 512k cache, high end sound card, DDR), so you should have no problem getting exactly what you need from their site.
Soyo is a nightmare, I've had to deal with them in the past.
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people doling out faulty information based upon rumors, myths, and poor logic!
I'd say the solution you looking for will probably have a Audigy 2 Platinum or Terratec DMX 6Fire 24/96 and an ATi All-In-Wonder. That should give you what you need and not break the bank. Also, 256MB of memory will work, but you'll probably be much better off with 512MB, leaving the option open to upgrade to 1GB.
