Will any wireless router work as a wifi extender?

I'm thinking about buying a wireless router to use as a wifi extender as the signal is weak upstairs. At the moment my pc upstairs is connected by ethernet cable, I'm thinking of connecting a router upstairs to this ethernet cable to have good wifi upstairs. And my pc does have wifi so I will use that.

But I'm not a tech wiz and don't know if this will work. Do I need to buy the same model of router?

And if the router downstairs breaks we have always got a spare.
