WIN XP is requiring password for network access. Why?

I am trying to access shared folders on a windows xp pc on my home network from a windows 8 pc. I see the windows xp pc on the network from the windows 8 pc, but when I click on the windows xp pc icon, a window appears that asks me to enter a user name and password. I actually do not have any password on the windows xp pc. Can you help? Thanks.
