Today, for the first time that I can recall, I
ran into a problem backing up which generated the
following report:
"HotSync operation started 06/11/04 11:07:30
OK Date Book
OK Address Book
OK To Do List
-- Memo Pad
- Some handheld records were not copied to your PC. Your computer
may be full or you may have reached the maximum allowed records on the
desktop. To correct this situation, delete some records and perform a
HotSync operation again.
Desktop = 684, Handheld = 683
OK Memo Pad with 1 message(s)"
There were a bit over 200 items in one category which I had been
adding to recently. After removing a few older ones, it synched.
Is this a known limit? Where is the problem? Is it the Hot Sync
Manager or Palm Desktop?

Well, you need to update. You are using pretty much obsolete systems. At
least you should install the latest versions of the software and of the Palm
ROM which are available. As I understand, the Palm m500 was not exactly
bug-free.
You should be able to have more than 60,000 memos as long as you have enough
RAM available for it.

He probably should update, but it may or may not solve his
problem. I have several Palms, using one as the primary device, but
make sure all of them have identical address, datebook, memopad and
todo databases (by using a batch file to copy .DAT files from the
primary Palm/user folders to the others before/after hotsyncs). All
has worked error free, except for occasional datebook hotsync
errors, which were virtually the same as jimomura's, I think also
off by only one record. The computer wasn't full, and the Palm had
plenty of free memory. The datebook app. has a very small number of
records, no more than several dozen. To 'correct this situation'
only a second hotsync needed to be done - no editing or deleting
required. As I never made important entries on any secondary palms,
nothing critical was lost.
I believe that Franklin Covey's replacement for the Palm Desktop
only allowed full-sized memopad or notes records (not sure if it was
one or both) instead of the standard 4k bytes. I'm don't recall
whether hotsyncing large records produced error messages or simply
truncated data in those records being sent from the Palm to the
Franklin desktop.

I'm using a m515 and my son a m100 on the same PC. Is there any way that
we can install one copy of the latest PC desktop software and use it
to sync either Palm?

I don't see why not. It sounds like you're already doing that, or
do you mean that the PC has two different copies of the desktop
software installed, one for the m515 and one for the m100 (which
would present hotsync complications)? I don't know if the m515 and
m100 use the same type of connector or not, but even if they don't,
that shouldn't present any problems.
I have used a single PC and single copy of the desktop software,
starting with a IIIx, later adding a second IIIx, followed by a
TRGPro (using its CD to upgrade the desktop software) and then
another handheld. At that point the 4 handhelds were running OS
versions 3.1, 3.3 and 3.52 and 3.53. After upgrading one of the
IIIx's to OS v4, the CD that provided the OS upgrade was also used
to upgrade the Palm Desktop software to version 4. There have
never been any problems syncing the various handhelds.
