PC3500 problems

I have an A7N8X Deluxe with an AMD XP2000+ and 256mb of PC3500 CL2 memory.

Under the bios if I set the memory by SPD it runs at 166mhz
If I try and go beyond 180mhz the system hangs.

I realise that the 2000+ will only run at 133mhz but shouldn't I still be able to set the memory to 200mhz.

I'm also only getting 2000 points under Sandra with settings at 5-2-2-2.

Is something wrong with the memory or am I being stupid. Sorry I'm new to this.

I am new also but having the same board and processor and first trying a ocz PC-3500 EL with it( without success) My guess is that your bios is a 1001G and from what I understand The 3500 will not work with it. I am waiting for a bios update from Asus that is a "sure" thing before I try again. In the mean time I just put in 2 X 256 PC-2100 (in blue slots)and everything is working great. I am thinking that when I update to a better processor(maybe barton) I will also get another 3500 stick and then work on the bios issue.( by then they might have all the problems ironed out for better ram)

You're right I have bios 1001G. I've tried updating it to 1002 with AsusUpdate but cannot connect to any servers. I also have OCZ PC3500 EL. Am I right in thinking it should go to 200mhz even with a 133mhz processor ?

I think the bios fixes the problem somewhat. Have you tried going the germany or the other sites. That's what I had to do. Have you tried 4-2-2-2 timings?

sorry I can't help you on your question of what it "should" do. Being new to computer building I currently only work with what "does" and "doesn't" work by process of elimination. My experiance will grow to include what "should" work as time goes by and I read more from this forum. Hopefully someone else will answer your questions and I to will understand better... good luck !!

The german site was the only one I could connect to but after selecting bios 1002 and downloading it I just get sent back to the select bios page. I'll give 4-2-2-2 a try in the meantime.

That reminds me, when I tried to set memory to 200mhz the bios automatically set the timings to something like 8-3-3-3 yet it still didn't work. Any ideas ?

Sorry juin but could you elaborate ? I've finally managed to download bios 1002 but spd still sets memory to 166mhz.

Do I have to wait for an even newer bios or have I been sold PC2700 in disguise ?

Maybe the ram just...sucks. OCZ did have a bad reputation and could have sold you sum bum ram, try corsair.

don't go by SPD
set your ratio to 4:6
manually set the memory timings to...2.5-4-4-7-2T, that's really low, and see if it will run properly
if it does, then lower yourself to...2-3-3-6-2T, if that runs fine then lower it some more...until stuff stops being stable
btw, all PC3500 is PC2700 in disguise, it's just using the best chips so they can run faster
your spd is not going to set the memory correctly

otherwise it's bad ram, RMA it
