My desktop won't detect the ethernet wired connection

I'm live in a dorm and have a desktop. Recently I've been trying to switch to a wired connection. The cord and the port works because I tested and the connection works fine with my laptop. But my desktop won't connect. The light where the cord plugs in lights up but my desktop does not detect it. Any suggestions?

does say it is disconnected? do you get an IP?

the port might only allow one MAC address which right now is your laptop. if so, you might have to talk to IT for them to reset it.
