Combat system:
Vagrant Story (PSX) for Melee combat, automap, titles and cutscenes.
Neverwinter Nights (PC) for magic (love that D&D spell system) and loot.

FF Tactics (PSX) for character customization. It's very 'gamey', but
very interesting. Substitute NWN feats for more realism.
Combination of World of Warcraft (PC) and VS for crafting and upgrading
gear.
Guild Wars (PC) for instances everywhere but towns. Great idea. Only
needed for online play, of course.
WoW for quests.
GW for graphics. A very pretty game, even on my limited system. NWN's
lighting system is superior to both WoW or GW, though. The terrain
graphics stink, unfortunately.
Story is a very personal matter, I'll leave that one open.

I'd play THAT game - A LOT!

An ideal RPG for me is Ultima or BG world and rules but using Morrowind
engine.

I played all the Ultima series except the last one. What's BG?

I wouldn't! After a game style has become established, I get bored of
it. I prefer new/innovative games, UIs, ideas, gameplay mechanics.

Except that thread was 5% 'burnt out' & the rest a Chess vs Go OT discussion
which degenerated into philosophy/religion before I marked it ignore...oh, I
get your point now W ;-)

Plus...the quests are the jumping point for the more interesting part of the
game - role playing with other actual people who have personalities but are
limited to their character abilities. The drama comes when your mage has a
hissy-fit in the middle of a difficult area and must be plied on with
promises of clothing purchases at the Auction House...while a giant demon
tree-thing comes stomping down the road at you...

The quests are there to get you to the cool scenery. I am a WoW tourist.
