Hi All:

I have an Alesis QS8.1 routed into the analog line in of a TB Santa Cruz,
and a Roland TD-7 routed into the Versa-Jack of the TB Santa Cruz
(configured as a second analog line-in). The setup is configured fine up to
this point; I can hear both instruments simultaneously through the TB.
However, I'm trying to simultaneously record these two instruments into two
recording tracks using KRISTAL audio, with no luck.

1) Are there any ASIO drivers for the TB Santa Cruz?

2) After following every tutorial and instruction on the KRISTAL site, I can
get nothing recorded. Is there a trick to this, or is there an inherent
incompatibility between the TB Santa Cruz and KRISTAL audio?

3) Are there any other free alternatives for recording 2 stereo analog
inputs simultaneously?

Thanks for any help.

I'm just guessing here, but I doubt the TBSC can record both inputs at
once. You may have to go mono outs of both the QS8 and TD7 into *one*
stereo input of the TBSC, unless the TD7 has an aux input that you can
send the QS8 into. Or get a small mixer to feed the TBSC from.

This would be a shame; it's one of the reasons I picked up the TBSC in the
first place. But that aside, I should still be able to record one or the
other (the QS8 or the TD7) with KRISTAL audio. It doesn't seem to want to
recognize either input, while WinXP and the TBSC recognize both.

This is a possibility, but I'd like to still have the option to edit the
recorded tracks individially afterward. This solution would prohibit this.

Sometimes you have to ask all the right questions in all the right
places and filter out the wrong answers (not just the ones you don't
want to hear). But this is difficult when it comes to things like
this. However, if you can hear both sources (how?) it's likely that
the card has an internal mixer. Turtle Beach did things like that, and
they have built four-channel cards in the past. I've lost track of
what they've been doing for the past half dozen or more years.

What the heck is KRISTAL Audio? A program, I guess. Try a different
program. Sometimes it's just not worth spending too much time getting
something to work. Audacity is nice and it's free. It records and edits.

How does Windows see your sound card? Does it look like two audio
devices, or one? If it's two, then you should indeed be able to record
the two separate stereo inputs independently. First try to get
anything working, then you can start figuring out what it can and
can't do.

Right, Mike! Take a look here for info KRISTAL Audio

http://kreatives.org/kristal

I have just given a short test to it, but it seems to work quite well
and there are quite a few others who like it...
It´s freeware as well as Audacity, but seems rather like cubase than
Audacity does.

To the OP:

If there are no dedicated ASIO-Drivers for your TBSC available, try
ASIO4ALL. This is a free add-on ASIO driver to give ASIO support to
audio cards that only have dedicated WDM drivers. A friend of mine
even got his Notebook´s onboard sound device (Sigmatel chipset) down
to a latency of 256 samples/buffer.

http://asio4all.com

That will probably not cure your problem with recording 4 inputs at
once, but it might improve your systems audio performance in other
regards...

good luck,

Philipp

the Santa Cruz _will_ record 4 channels at once (assuming you have the
latest WDM drivers -- there were problems with earlier versions).

but you have to configure the "versa jack" for line-in 3/4 in the Santa Cruz
mixer, and also setup the Windows mixer so that the "line-in" is selected as
the "recording device" and "aux" is selected as "other" > "second analog
record". windows will open separate mixer windows for "record control" and
"second analog record", and the proper devices must be checked under the
volume fader.

there is a description of this process in their on-line documentation.

ASIO4ALL supports the TBSC/CS4630

Santa Cruz can indeed record 4 simultaneous channels, but I can't
remember whether two of them are required to be SP/DIF.

Kristal is a nice host, but I prefer eXT.

If I wasn't buried under a pile of work, I'd try it for you. I have a
Santa Cruz sitting on the shelf that I've been meaning to put in a
machine.
