Hi,

I'm looking to get a phone with Sprint PCS and they've told me about
the 1 year contract ($100 rebate) or the 2 year contract ($150
rebate). I don't mind what the term contract is... but was wondering
what phones would be recommended? Which ones have a history of
problems or should be avoided? All comments and suggestions welcomed.

Thanks.

Hey Jones ... welcome to our circus. As SPCS offers a number of different
models, with different features, you probably need to define which features
(Camera, Vision SMS, or ReadyLink capable) might interest you, and whether
you want a clam shell or a candy bar phone ...

As to manufacturers, Sanyo and the new Nokias have received the most praises
here. Some people like Samsungs better.

I've had both Samsungs and Sanyos, and I prefer Sanyo handsets ...

Well, I found the Sanyo 8100 to be boring and overly optimistic on its
reception indicator (meaning it showed more bars than other phones). It
lost signal in the same areas as my other phones (Samsung A400, A460 and
A500). So, I purchased an A680 today and will be selling my Sanyo 8100.
Actually, the phone is very good and stable, but primarily, just boring.

So .. if it wasn't alread obvious, I recommend the Samsung A680 if you
don't need ready-link (push to talk equivalent). It has a neat video
clip option where it can record up to 15 seconds, but it is more a
novelty than useful. However, the camera is very good (and it has
zoom) and the browswer is quite fast as opposed to any other phone that
I have used.

The 8100 is a signal bar fluffer, as is many of the other sanyo models.
But, the Sanyo phones are pretty reliable, and the 4900 in particular
had really good voice quality in my experience, but semi-soft in the
earpiece volume, even with the firmware update (and known sweet spot).

If you are looking for a nice voice only phone, the Nokia 3588i would be
a great choice. It would also be free after the $150 rebate. It
doesn't have a camera nor does it have any Vision, but its quality is
suberb, and it is true sms text messaging enabled.

In theory his $30 plan does not qualify for rebates these days. Thats
why he may be better served talking to Retention.

BTW ... the Samsung A680 has true SMS as well :)

Perhaps. But he asked for phone advice, so at least that should be
answered.

I like my new Toshiba VM-4050. Came out to $100 at Costco after a $150
rebate for a 2 year contract, and included a nice "kit" with leather
holster, car charger, and earpiece. It has a camera with "flash" and can
take 15 second videos, but I mostly like the overall design and feel. It
seems very solid and well-built, and is very easy to use. And the color
screen is excellent. As for plans, you might want to ask Sprint about
retention plans. I ended up with a $100/2500 minute plan with a free 2nd
line and free Vision, but they also offered $40/750 and $50/1000 plans. If
you have a good track record with Sprint and have been with them a while,
you should be able to get one of these if you ask, especially if you
threaten to leave for another carrier. Good luck.
