Is 1024 MB RAM really unneccesary for a gaming computer?

Only if you want to surf on MS-IE 6, type in MS-Word XP, play with Unreal II, listen to MP3 using Media Player 9 at the same time then you'll need 1GB of RAM.

if you can afford it performance will improve. I know I could use it for when I alt-tab out of shrouded isles (dark age) and play music. If you can't afford it 512mb is fine.

Either 512 or 1024 are fine, but for gaming, the size of RAM on the graphics card is more than that of the system.

Not unneccesary at all for a high end gaming machine (Only if your going with a dual DDR chipset). A few games out now and some of the newer games recommend 512MB of ram. 1024 is probably still overkill but 768 will probably be a sweet spot for the next couple rounds of games.
