Boot drive with Windows 7 question

Ok so I'm building my pc and I figured its better to have a boot drive and a data drive. So how much space does Windows 7 take up after all Window's updates? I'm looking at a smaller SSD, possibly a msata version since I'm getting the Asus Maximus V Gene that has the msata adapter thing.

  1. Well I wouldn't go below a 60Gig SSD although you can easily as windows will fit easy on a 20Gig. I have a 60GIG Boot and App Drive and any massive programs e.g. Warcaft installed to a separate drive. I wish I had gone for a 120 now though as its just to small.
  2. Well this is a drive just for Windows, and all Windows programs. Everything else will be on a 1-1.5 TB HDD.
  3. Windows and your drivers can take from 25-40GB on your drive. I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than an 80GB for a boot drive.
  4. Thanks, now if I can just find one for a reasonable price.
  5. What's your budget?
  6. Budget is under $1000, lower the price the better.

I still have the SSD, Data drive, RAM, PSU, and a case. I was thinking about the Cooler Master HAF 922 for the case, $83.98 at Best Buy. I can go for a different case if I need to.
  7. Wow. Looks like a good setup, but I just meant for the SSD.

A good 650W Corsair PSU for $65 after rebate:

A decent plain antec three hundred mid-tower case with good airflow for $55:

If you want more of a gamer look a 912 is great for $60:

Western Digital Black 500GB for $80:

A solid reliable Intel 120GB SSD for your boot drive for $170:

That would be a good solid setup.
  8. Thanks, and I might change the motherboard if I can find out when the Maximus V Extreme comes out, or the Maximus V Formula. I love how the Maximus V Gene is small but has the power of a full gamer ATX board, the Formula has water cooling built into the heatsink, and the Extreme is the ATX version of the Gene, having more PCIe slots and such!
And is Newegg trusted or not? I'm always hearing they are and they aren't, so I'm not sure if I should go with them. That's why I went with Best Buy and Circuit City, I've used them both for years and had no issues with them.
  9. You should consider a local microcenter if there's one near you as well.

I swore off best buy in Sept 2011 after a total fail on refrigerator delivery/return. I don't trust them a bit.

Newegg is solid, but I don't always agree with their return policies. Make sure you read them so you understand what you can expect. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them, but like I said, some of the return policies make me wince.
  10. Well I've always heard that Newegg might have great prices and such, but their customer service is horrible and they refuse to cooperate.
But then again, when is customer service ever reliable?

True. I haven't had to ever deal with their customer service. I've never had to return anything to newegg.
