I've got the choice between a PCI Crystal CS4280-CM (retail value $10) or the onboard sound for the Asus A7M266 (C-Media CMI-8738 PCI Audio Controller
4-Channel Speaker Mode). Which would you choose?

Onboard, if the rest of your computer is worth a damn, the effect of it should be negligable. That $10 POS is exactly that, a $10 POS. I wouldn't put a POS in my computer, the smell doesn't sit well with me (lol).

But really, the onboard should sound much better, it is made by the same people who make the Hercules Muse card.

Water cooling is for the weak. Get liquid nitrogen.

In this case... the onboard. C-media isn't an entirely bad sound system, unless you want to play a lot of midi music.

Why not pick up a Creative SB-PCI128 card? They can be had for about $20.00 nowadays and the sound quality is very good.

I would just use the Onboard sound and save $10.
