Has anyone tried this one out yet? It's written with the vegastrike
sourcecode. I'm going to play through it and see where it leads.

It's not like there are a whole lot of new space-sims to choose from.
I'm beginning to think that the genre is truely dead.

Where is Elite 4 when you need it!

Any chance you'll give us a review of this? I'd love to hear what you
think of it.

I think I know this one: you have to really, truly believe with all your
heart. Oh, and clap your hands, too.

Woot! Privateer was my first computer game way back when. Thanks for the
link. This is the Ghost of Christmas Past indeed. Amazing that they
persuaded Origin (or whatever they're calling themselves these days) to let
them use the old Privateer graphics which, BTW, look kinda pixelated
stretched to 1280 x1024. Uses the Vegastrike engine to power it and suits
it fine.

Loaded up Grampaws old Tarsus and am now pooting around the home system
visiting all the old familiar haunts. Almost identical to my memories of the
original so far with the only exceptions being the Vegastrike
merchandise/Ship upgrade final panels and think thats due to the limitations
of the old fonts as much as anything. Blundered into a fight between a Retro
and a Confed and was forcibily reminded just how weak the starter Tarsus
was. IIRC you need to build it up a bunch before venturing out system but
once the old Tarsus gets buff it can pretty much play out the game.

Off to Hector to swap some Ag goods for minerals

I've been trying to make it through Gothic 2 for the longest time now.
I finally found it last week at a GameStop for $10. Great buy, but the
game is freakin' hard! I love it! Level 1 and running into Orc Elites
that eat you for breakfast with one hit.

I've been playing for a week, second restart (to learn the ropes) and
so far I've done most of the city quests but haven't decided on a
profession or a guild. Mages seem to be pretty lame, Paladins are waay
too uptight, so prolly I'll go for mercs.

Anyone know how to kill that black troll?? He's tough. =P

Possiblly. Played for an hour and it didn't impress me like the
original Privateer. It doesn't have the same feel to it. The
atmosphere is all wrong.

I'll try a few more beers and some herbal insentive. Maybe then I'll
make it to New Detriot to start the plot-line. Still, the old
privateer gets me going alot easier.

Same with the new Pirates!. I remember playing Pirates! waaay back in
the NES days. Pirates Gold on the PC was kick-ass too, but buggy as
hell. Still, the gameplay as engrossing. This new Pirates! is like
playing a PS2 game. No strategy really, just alot of eye candy and
mashing keys. The land battles are better though, but the game itself
it a total disappointment. A sad waste of $50.

If game developers are going to charge $50+ for games, they need to
write decent games, or stop crying about warez! If I had gotten this
game through warez, I would've uninstalled the damn thing and saved
myself $50. =P

X2, UC, Starshatter, Iwar2, any of the SW games... I haven't seen a
really great space sim since Terminus. I mean, they are all good to a
certain degree, but they still haven't reached FFE yet, and FFE came
out in 1995.

I picked up Gothic 2 several months ago -- I started playing it, but for
some reason set it aside. I don't remember why, really -- I was enjoying
it. But boy, I remember it was very easy to get in way over my head! I
remember getting lost in the woods and forced to run from some monster or
other, and when I found myself among some standing stones things started to
get really ugly. I had a whole monster parade chasing me in circles.

I agree with you about mages and paladins -- mercs seemed like the best
option.

I'll have to dig that one up again after I'm done with Vampire/Bloodlines.

I was almost hypnotized into buying this title (fond memories of the
original), but was dissuaded by online reviews.

Yeah, but maybe we should count our blessings. I grew up on Defender and
Asteroids. And Galaxian and Space Invaders. And that Star Trek game where
you flew around a galaxy full of *s in your E trying to defeat of flotilla
of Ks.

Heck, I just remembered that I actually paid money to play Pong. And here
I thought I had successfully repressed that. I'll move on, now: the pathos
is killing me.

The clapping was a non-starter, then?

Ah, geez, I don't remember exeactly where I was. I recall coming to a
swamp (lake?), and following a path to the left up a hill where I met
someone who was much tougher than I was. He killed a couple of baddies
that I had "cleverly" "lured" there. Anyway, by now I realized that I was
way out of my depths, and decided to head back to the city for awhile.
Unfortunately, I was completely disoriented and quickly became hopelessly
lost. It wasn't long before I found several baddies that were more than
willing to be cleverly lured anywhere I cared to run. Eventually, I ran
across some standing stones (think "Stonhenge"), where I encountered some
undead thingies that quickly ate my lunch.

Heh! Well, your "running in terror" adventure was certainly more fruitful
than mine!

Did you ever play the original "Gothic"? How does it compare to the
sequel?

Perhaps I'll just content myself with the fond memories.

It's gotta be worth a try. I you'll take care of the virgin and Venus,
I'll get 2 bus tickets to Capricorn (I think that's in SoCal, isn't it?)

I did manage to spend a few hours playing the Remake, and I really do
perfer the original, but that's prolly to be expected.

This remake does have alot going for it though. Besides the graphics
and resolution improvements, the economy seems to be alot more dynamic
in that there are more things that you can actuially make a profit on.
More commodities, more upgrades, weapons, and overall traffic in the
space regions.

You still only get 3 ships like in the original, but the flight model
seem alot different. Mouse controls for flight weren't that responsive
( and sometimes overly responsive ), and there seems to be an
incessent left-drift on my M$ sidewinder 3D stick, that doesn't happen
in other space-sim/flight games.

Combat is a real chore until you get the hang of it, but you can still
do a fair bit of patrols and such, even in a mediumly equiped taurus.

I haven't started any of the plots or ran into any Kilrathi yet, so
we'll see on that.

Over all, a pretty damn good retro of the original Privateer. Once
somebody refits those 640x480 cockpits to run at higher resolutions
(or maybe 3D cockpits), the game will look even better.

I spent quite a bit of time playing VS last year. I assumed the combat and
trading in the P remake were pretty much the same as in VS.

The interface is the same, but I think the trade model is different in
that the items are mostly from Privateer. Most of the upgrades can be
found in VS I believe, but it's been awhile.

As far as combat, VS was too clunky in massive firefights. This remake
handles combat alot better resource-wise, but I still like the
original better.

Still for an open-source game, it's thumbs-up!

Does it also have the content of the AddOn-Disk?
(Righteous Fire)

Or is it Priv Only (Killing the steltek-Drone and that´s it)
