Can anyone tell me if I can put a second hard drive in that has windows 95 on it...when the master hard drive has win 98se? Also, once I do... can I succesfully copy files, folders, and or documents onto the master drive from the secondary drive...as well as working with those documents, etc. within their original drive? Thanks.

Yes, just pop it in there and you can use it for storage. No problems. If you want to BOOT off the 95 drive, you'll need a boot loader program.

Thank you so much. The 95 drive is on a 486 and belongs to a doctor who is very concerned about saving his old documents...but is in need of the new comp. He will proceed to do all his new work on the upgraded office software...but was too scared to upgrade because it might have denied him access to the old business docs. He is too busy with patients and paper work to get involved with the technology...this is good for folks like us! LOL. Anyway, he is a good friend and I won't be taking advantage of him. Crashman, I don't know where you and the people that are regulars on this board get the energy to always be there...but I am so grateful that you are. By the way, is it possible for files saved in win 95 to be transferred onto the win 98 os drive? I am hoping if I also put in the old office software on 98 (as an added option)...his office staff will still be able to use it to open and if necessary... work with, print or modify those docs. Also, please... what are the name of the boot loaders?

OK, HERE'S your plan. Read CAREFULLY!

Put all his documents in ONE folder. Put that folder in a handy location, like the C:\ drive root directory, ie C:\MyFolder.

Put the old drive in a completely loaded new system. Easiest location is secondary master. The CD drive should already be the secondary master, simply transfer the cables to the old hard drive. Boot up and make sure the drive is detected by BIOS (set BIOS to autodetect drive if not already set). In typical configurations this means you'll have two hard drives now and no CD. Fine.

Go into windows (remember when I said a completely loaded new computer) and transfer the directory from his old hard drive to a handy location on the new hard drive.

Remove his old hard drive and put it back in his old system. Put the new PC back together. Now his files will be on BOTH his old and his new system.

Windows95 can read files from Windows 98 and vice versa. You simply need to be sure you load an application that can read the files. For example, MS Works 5.0 can't read documents from Office XP because it's older. Etc. So just make sure you load the proper APPLICATIONS to read all his documents.

What a mess! First, I installed the 95 hd from 486 into new comp. This HD had no jumpers on the pins and no info. written on it... as to what the master/slave, etc. might be. The maxtor I had already installed had a jumper on it, but it was an older drive and it too lacked jumper instructions. So, I put the 95 hd on same cable as maxtor and hoped it would just happen to come up right. Well I booted and nothing...black. So, I booted again and went into bios..."Oh My God!"...my maxtor drive was written in "greek". LOL. So, I tried putting the 95 drive second to cd...than cd disappeared. As a last recourse... I reached into the 486 case that I had to rip open (because it was locked a long time ago and I needed to get the 95 drive)...and pulled a jumper off the mobo and slapped it on the last two pins of the 95 drive (which was an old 1.6g WD Caviar). I than reinstalled it second to the maxtor and BINGO! What luck! It now came up as an additional storage drive "D:"; leaving A:, C:, and CD as E: intact! Well to cut to the chase...the doc and office staff were very pleased! What a lucky guess and big break for me! We even managed to copy his important documents on C: as well as to leave the old copies on D: And yes I did pull out your thread during all this...thanx again Crashman and also to you LGHPooBaa. I just wanted to post the outcome. Sometimes we forget to give updates about the problems we ask help for.

LOL, my suggestion was to put the CD as the secondary channel single drive (NO CD) and coppy the files, then remove the drive and put it back in the old system, and reconnect the CD drive on the new system. That would have prevented the mess you mentioned and left the old system as a complete backup system.

Old system is gone now. Died due to lack of patience. Shame.
LOL!
