I need an external firewire 40 GB+ hard drive for Mac. I do not want to
pay a lot of money and would be TOTALLY happy with a used one - so long
as it's working. I already have an OWC work drive which I like quite a
bit, but they are expensive when new and hard to find used.
Any thoughts on where to buy? I've tried Craigslist and Recycler here
in L.A. but pickin's are slim right now.
Also, is there any LEGAL way to obtain a copy of system 10.2.8 for the
Mac? Turns out my cards are so old they will not run on my current
system (10.3.5) and I'm sick and tired of throwing money at Apple
(already bought 2 new systems from them. Ugh.)
I'll use the new drive to boot from (with 10.2.8 installed) so that I
needn't "dumb down" my resident system which, finally, seems to be
calming down my rather ornery G4.
Try
http://www.pricewatch.com/ Another solution would be to use a normal IDE HD and install it in an
external enclosure.
I'm sorry I can't help about the mac-specific issues...
Good Luck,

Surely LA has a forsale newsgroup. I know Austin, TX has one, and
the SF Bay Area has one, and most other big cities do too. You can
often find pretty good deals on local forsale newsgroups. And
since they're local, you can go check out the stuff before you
buy, which is good with used gear.

You just need any version of 10.2 and you can Software Update your
way to 10.2.8 from there, right? If you have more than one Mac, seems
like you would already have some 10.2.x CDs lying around, unless
they're all pretty new Macs.
Of course you can also buy it used (probably someone somewhere who
upgraded to 10.3 will have one to sell), and you can't do that,
pricegrabber.com shows this site that still has it in stock:
I know nothing about that company, but the point is that price
comparison engines are one way of finding old products that a
few companies still have in stock. :-)
Also, half.com lists 3 copies of 10.2 that're available.
And searching for "mac jaguar retail" on eBay shows a few
there too.
