Sony previews first Blu-Ray disc recorder - 4000 dollars

Sony will start the sales of the first blue ray recorders. The drive will cost about $4000 and should be available next month. The drive is able to record up to 23 GB on a single disc.

The recorder, which includes a built-in broadcast satellite tuner, will hit store shelves in Japan on April 10. No date has been set yet for an overseas roll-out

The machine will give Sony, the world's largest consumer electronics maker, a head start over its partners in the Blu-ray consortium, a nine-member group of industry heavyweights that unveiled a common format for blue laser DVDs a year ago.

Blue light, with a shorter wavelength than red, can read and store data at much higher densities needed for high-definition recordings.

The drives are currently mainly targetted to those who want to record high-definition TV programmes. The drive is also able to read DVD-R(W) discs, but cannot play back DVD-RAM and DVD+R(W) discs.

Ok, so you have $4000 bucks to spend. You can either buy one of these drives which burn 23GB or you can buy 57142 CD-R disks at Best Buy (100 on sale for $7 after rebates).

That's 23GB vs 40 TB

LOL

Of course it would take a year, non stop, to burn all those cd's.

What do you expect about the price? Blue LED technology is still very imature when compared to the more common red one, the price for a discrete blue LED is five times that of a red one and the performance is far inferior in terms of efficency and light output.
The prices will drop, oh how they will drop.

But you all miss the major point, how much do you think these disks are gonna cost? I rember when 4.7Gig disks cost about 20 quid....

Water cooling for increased performance
Vodka cooling for increased enjoyment

That Sony machine is only for your home entertainment system and not PC yet.

"Arrrggghhh, this is gettin hard, both my hands is tired but my right is stronger than my left and it's my buying hand! "

Yep. I'm not even going to touch that post.

So anyways, those 57 thousand cdr's?

If you stacked them in columns of 1000, you could fill a whole standard closet. Yet, with these 23gig disks, you'd have just a few spindles. Whiiiiiiiiiiich, is the point.

I'm totally happy with my DVD burner. And it severly rockxxorz over my cdr drives. I'd imagine the blue light specials will seriously rock over the DVD's too. Especially for network admins looking for a fast and space-saving backup solution. I dunno what the write speed is on those, but I bet it's two hours or under. 11gig per hour?
