My friend is think about getting the ELSA MicroLink 56k USB modem. He currently have Windows XP on his computer. I am wondering if this modem have driver for Windows XP.
Thanks.
You'd need to visit their website to be shure, but most things have XP drivers now.
BUT!!!
If you are looking for a modem that's going to work right:
a) Don't go with USB for communications.
b) Don't buy software driven modems.
For a few dollars more you can get a hardware driven 3Comm/Us Robotics PCI modem that will perform flawlessly. The model to look for is the USR-2977 (or it's successor). I've had one in my computer for over a year and it's never missed a beat... Before that I had a cheapie software modem and had nothing but headaches, it wouldn't even send a FAX without crashing.
<b>(</b>It ain't better if it don't work.<b> )</b>
A hardware modem has both a data pump and processing chip on it. Most external modems and those old ISA slot ones are hardward type. Software modem, on the other hand, has a data pump but no processor on it. Software modem are also called Winmodems coz they only work under Windows but not DOS, Linux, etc.
Most internal modems are PCI slot type, and are unfortunately also software modems. Why? Coz to keep the cost low, PCI modems are usually made without processing chip and rely on software to do that.
The modern equivilent of the US Robotics 2977 is the 5610B, which is also v92/44 compatible, depending on whether your ISP has the hardware to support v92 or not. Very good modems though. Conexant softmodems are OK for every day type stuff but if you are a serious gamer, surfer, etc. then you definately need the hardware modem instead. Be prepaired to pay around $90 (US) for the 5610B though. The 2977 will probably be a little cheaper but will likely be limited in numbers available because of it being older technology.
It is an external modem connect via USB port. The modem will not be use for internet connection since he have cable modem already. He need a modem because his fax machine broke. I told him that I use my computer to send and receive fax. He want to do the same and decide to get a modem.
The reason he want an external modem is because his computer only have 5 PCI slots and he already used 4 of them. He perfer save the slot for other use. Do you think a serial port modem will be better?
