We have AT&T@Home cable internet access in our apartment. We bought a Linksys router and hooked the cable from the receiver box into that and then hooked ethernet cables into two computers. Everything seems to be set up correctly, because browsing the internet works fine (and fast also). However, I run Gamespy to connect to Counter-Strike games. When I update my server list, it gives me several games with sub 50 pings. These are the servers that I would like to play. However, when I connect to the games the ping is around 600 everytime. Has anyone else had this same problem? Shouldn't a cable internet connection be faster than that?

Specs:

Athlon 1.4 ghz Athlon T-Bird w/ 266 mhz FSB
Abit KG7-RAID
512 MB PC2100 DDR
Linksys NIC
Linksys Router
AT&T@Home

Is it possible that I didn't set up something correctly on the router that is still allowing me to get internet access but slows it down severely on games.

BTW, the Linksys router is the 4 port model with 2 PC's attached.

go to http://www.dslreports.com and run their tweaktests to see if your settings are appropriate for cable.

antivirus, you have @Home with the Linksys 4 Port Router, correct?

when you went to the IP first to set up the router, what did you put in the "Host Name" and "Domain Name" spots?

600 ping is not going to allow me to play Counter-Strike... I might have to move back into the dorms for my 10 ping :)

Also, the cord running from the router to my machine is 50 ft. long? That wouldn't make a difference, would it?

i put 'server' and '@home' in those respective spots in the router, although i believe all that is necessary is the correct network id, such as 'cx100101' to properly communicate with the @home network.

the reason i want you to run those speed and tweak test over at dslreports is to isolate your problem. first step in any troubleshooting endevour is to isolate the issue. here you are running around not sure if its your settings, the cable, the servers, your pc......see? If you run the tests and get around 500 kb/sec download and at least 128 kb/sec upload then i think your line/router/server is ok. if you get anything below that, then run the tweak tests to determine if the problem is software/registry settings. if after running the tweak tests you detwrmine your settings are cool, then look to the long ethernet cable from the router to the pc (it is cat5 cable, right?). run the tests if you havent already so we can do this the smart way, amigo......

Alright, I just got home. I was away for the weekend. I am going to run the tests like you said, but right now our internet does not work. Crappy @Home. Anyway, I am going to call them tomorrow and if they can't fix it I am switching to Qwest DSL right away.

Slightly off the newtwork configuring/tweaking replies, but where exactly do you see the servers with the "sub 50" pings? Is it:

a:>immediately after updating/refreshing servers?
b:>if you click on "view game info"?
c:>when you actually join the server?

If it is choice "a" or "b", then it is NOT your cable service provider. Happens to me (& many others) all the time, & I am on dsl.

I always ignore the servers at or near the top of the list. Most show latency between 30ms & 60ms, but I have a 28.8 modem like ping when I join. It's just way easier to "view game info" on these servers to actually see their "true" pings. The "false" (to you) pings shown is a HL/WON issue.

Alternatively, many times I'll notice a server that shows a lousy ping (like 500ms) but has a suspiciouly large amount of players on it. So I do a "view game info" on it & what do you know - it now reports as a 70ms server. Strange.........

Cheers,

If you loan a friend $20 & never see them again, it was worth it.

Well, the @Home is back up and running again, and I have somewhat worked around the problem. Get this, when I use the server list inside of CS itself, I get the pings reflected by it, usually 50-100 if I choose a good server near the top. I really don't know why Gamespy lies to me, but oh well.
