What are the best known fan (case, harddrive, video card) manufacturers? What are the ones to stay away from? Not necessarily looking for the best types, but especially the ones to "stay away" from, if possible..

Best? Spire and thermaltake.

Worst? Sunon ... just say no!

most are pretty much the same, except for the really bad yumcha garden varieties.

Thermaltake, vantec, sunon, delta, enermax are all pretty good, producing reliable ballbearing fans.
Special note goes to pabst and panaflo though.
Pabst individually ballance each fan, reducing vibration, noise and increasing life span.

Panaflo dont use ballbearings, rather a specially patented self lubricating slieve bearing... and it DOES work. Very quiet fans with no ball bearing buzz.

Is that panaflo bearing based on Oillite Bronze?

If so... where can I get them?

Im not sure what the bearing is based on, but i know from firsthand it DOES work. Completely lacks the ball bearing buzz that characterises most other low to medium speed 80mm casefans ive compared it to.

I dunno about your corner of the world, but in australia i got mine from <A HREF="http://www.pccasegear.com" target="_new">http://www.pccasegear.com</A>

Ahhh... yer an Aussie is ya... There's some fine country down under!

I'm in Canada, cold country!

But now I have a link to panaflow's homepage (<A HREF="http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/appliance/appliance_fans_panaflo_axial.htm" target="_new">http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/appliance/appliance_fans_panaflo_axial.htm</A> ) I'll see if any of my suppliers can get one for me to try.

Thanks for putting me onto this!

Yep... found a wholesaler that carries them right here in town... soon as I order my next batch of parts I'll get a couple in to play with.

Thanks again, for putting me onto this.

No worries mate.
I have the 2000rpm 80mm one and the 1700rpm 120mm one.

the only downside is their odd power cord attachment (at the fan hub) have to specifiy that you want bare wires, 3pin or 4 pin connector.

also i DONT THINK u can monitor their rpm's... though the connector does have a spot for the 3rd wire. strange.

How much are you getting them for?

Hard to find it for a good price in Vancouver.

Don't know, haven't ordered them yet...
If the pricing is in line with other fans I've bought, probably about $8 or $9 each.
