I don't really know the genre of music very well but can someone
explain why hip-hop guys seem to really love SSL's?
Every hip-hop video has the obligatory scene in the studio, hanging out
on the SSL and it seems like the hip-hop crowd actually do use these
things a lot, not just as props for the video.
A lot of that music is really sparse, yeah they've got a lot of
samples/synths and some vocal dubs going on, but compared to a lot of
other forms of music, it doesn't seem like you would need a 96 channel
automated console to mix that stuff.
Seems like a lot of real estate just to get an SSL bus compressor on
the stereo mix.
Maybe it's a bling thing, like the giant chrome wheels on all the
Escalades in the videos?
Having/using an SSL is a definite sign you've got money.
Analogeezer
p.s. Is it just me or are there an abnormal amount of used SSL's on the
market now?

They sound pretty good for that kind of music, there are a lot of
studios that use them so it's easy to move a project from one studio
to another, and this genre of music is pretty much constructed in the
control room during mixing from recorded segnents. That's easy to do
with SSL automation. It's of course also easy to do with ProTools, but
that doesn't look nearly as cool in videos. And besides, some of these
guys like to like the sound of drums, bass, and guitars recorded on
analog tape.

Something that the hip-hop artists have plenty of.

Sure. Everybody's gotta have the latest, plus there are a lot of
studios that went into business with an SSL and couldn't afford it.
But if you count, you'll probably find more used Mackies.

No, they actually have a very deep inseurity about the artistic value of
their music, and like to have pix of big desks with lots of knobs and
buttons and meters in order to bolster that fragility. Maybe there are more
SSLs around, or they look mnore 'dangerous' than other brands...
