I am working on a broken computer given to my sister and her kids. When it tries to boot, you hear 2 beeps followed by 1 beep. The message comes up that says: Pri MasterDrive-ATAPI Incompatible. F1 to resume. There is no harddrive recognized in CMOS either.

I have rearranged cables and swapped with a known good harddrive and still the same problem. The CD ROM and Floppy both work fine. I have the CD ROM and HD on separate cables.

Any ideas on where I should start looking to correct this problem?

What brand/model of hard drive is it? Have you checked the manufacturer site's support section? Check there and get some of the drive utilities and try running those on the drive.

Also what MB is it? Do you have the latest BIOS update?

Those are the things I'd look at first.

Take of all your other ide devices, make sure your hd is set to master, clear cmos, and try to boot with just the hd. All I can think of...

To err is human... to really screw things up you need a computer!

Enter the motherboards bios and try to autodetect the harddrive. It sounds like a previous user might have set the bios settings for a different HDD then the one you are using now.

It's not what they tell you, its what they don't tell you!
