Caler gets 8 rings, then to Voicemail, cell never rings

Using an LG 5200 in various places around San Diego, ranging from
South Bay to Down Town to Del Mar and all places in between and at all
times, I have an irksome problem with my Sprint PCS LG 5200.


I'll have my phone sitting near me, turned on.
The Caller will hear 8-10 rings, and then the phone goes to voicemail.
I never hear a ring. Soon the phone will (usually) show a voicemail.
And yet sometimes in the same spot, same time of day, sometimes within
minutes, the phone will ring if someone calls.

If there were no rings and the caller went directly to voicemail I
would assume that the system had lost my phone or it was turned off.
Since the caller is hearing 8-10 rings, the system believes my phone
is connected. And my phone will receive the voicemail indicator/tone.

What's up with this?

Did you port your number to Sprint? That can cause delays and the
problem you are having.

This is a common symptom of CDMA. I think it happens to all of us at
one time or another but to hear as many as 8-10 rings is not normal.
It should be 4-5 rings and then VM should pick up. This problem
affects some customers more than others for some reason. It also
affects certain markets more than others. The phone can also play a
role in this. You could call tech support and ask for your voicemail
to be reset and ask them to do a 'phone number reload' into their
system. This could help solve this but is a long shot.

No this problem doesn't affect GSM as much. But GSM has other quirks
instead such as blocked calls and system busy which is less common
with CDMA. So no technology is perfect.

The "workaround" is to set it to only use Sprints Network if it is happening
a lot.
When I go down in the basement, Verizon's signal is really strong there ( I
have a A/B freq amplifier down there ) so, the phone would "roam" on
Verizon's network. As soon as you make a phone call, ( any number *4, *2,
611, home phone, etc ) and you are picking up Sprints signal, the phone will
register/sync itself on Sprints network again and you will get the incoming
calls again.

Verizon's network sometimes gets confused as well when it roams on other
carriers and then goes back to Verizon's.
