Hey gang-

We retired our old Samsung SCH8500s last week and got two new Samsung
A680 Vision phones. Mostly happy with them, but here is something so
weird that I think it must have missed testing at Samsung and slipped
through as a bug.

If the phone is charging, Calls Ringer "vibrate" setting is ignored.
Even if you have it set to Vibrate, a call will ring through (and
LOUDLY) if the phone is charging. Try it and you'll see what I mean.

Where does this come into play? When I'm on the road, I use the phone
as a night-table clock and alarm. My SCH8500 alarm and call ringers
were independent. I could have the call ring set to vibrate so I
wouldn't be disturbed, but the alarm would ring through. Not so with
the A680.

Oh yes- and it's also annoying that the display backlight won't sleep
while charging. It's bright enough to light the room, and again makes
it less than desirable in the night-table alarm mode.

You're not the only one. Mine does the same thing, so
it looks like a software glitch. Maybe they'll fix it. Maybe not.

My phone seems to act as normal. Are you sure you didn't turn the
volume up to "Ring And Vibrate"?

I agree about the backlight on the external display. I also wish it
would display the time and signal at all times, but I suppose that only
works well with an LCD rather than the color gizmos they have now (also
a form of LCD I suppose).

As a followup, I didn't actually test this. However, I frequently
leave it in vibrate mode when charging and I have never had any ring
come blasting out while it is charging. Perhaps I will do a formal test
this evening.

I seem to have software version XC15 and hardware version A680.08.

Let me know the outcome. We tested this on both our A680s, and both
behaved the same. If charging and ringer set to vibrate, an incoming
call rings through.

I didn't get a chance to try it last night (worked very late) however,
it almost sounds as if it was intended as a feature as vibrate clearly
won't have its intended effect, because nobody wears a phone while it is
being charged. If it is a feature, I would consider it "buggy".

Hard to say. Yes, it's true that you wouldn't wear the phone while it's
charging, but you probably also wouldn't be using it as an alarm clock
while it's NOT charging. (i.e. most folks charge their phones at
night.)

So, hard to say. I think they should have just left it alone. Oh well.

You should also try a alarm-while-charging test with the ring volume set
to "Silence All", which is the setting below "Vibrate". See if 'Silence
All' will mute an incoming call but not mute an alarm (despite its name).

I tried it on an A680. When set to 'Silence All', the
alarm-while-charging makes no sound.

I just tried it tonight, and it seems that if you set it to "vibrate", it
will ring at the last volume set when charging.

It seems like an OK feature if it were configurable.
