I have an old Chilton Desk. It was ex BBC OBC and hence, the Audiofad
Faders go backwards!
(I was told this was to avoid on air or live recording "incidents". If
you accidently lean on the desk the faders go up and things get quiet
which I guess could ruin a live recording)
Anyway, they seem intermittant sometimes and some crackle. Can these
type be cleaned (they have a metal shaft ) and if not, where might I
find replacements??
Cheers in advance

Yes, they can be cleaned. I suspect that if they are beyond cleaning
that they can also be rebuilt with new elements and sliders. Take
the back off and look at the condition of the sliders and how worn
looking the element is. You can clean the elements with some Cailube
and a q-tip. While you're at it, clean the metal rail that the
sliders run on and put a little light lubricating oil on them.
While you have them apart, look at the sliding contacts and see if the
feathery tips are all worn out. If they are bent they might be
possible to bend back into position with a hemostat but if they are
worn down there isn't much to do but replace the contacts.
