A customer of mine has a Revox C278 1/2" 8tk. He Loves it!

Revox say "Go away".
Studer (It's a Studer Motor) Say "not used in anything else; go ask
Revox"!!

Anybody know anything before I try pulling it to pieces???

What is wrong with the motor? Does it turn? Does it turn at all
speeds? Is it just bad bearings?

If it's just bad bearings it should be an easy rebuilding job.

-- Oh, one of the last Revox types. But why the new motor? The
windings could be gone only if mechanically schratched or a wire
broken, what is under normal circumstances almost impossible (well if
somebody pushed a screwdriver trough bell rotor holes to "assist"
removal, these would be rather abnormal circumstances I must say). So
if stator wires are OK (they can be checked with an ohmmeter for
continuity), the motor needs just to be dismantled and the bearings
cleaned. The front sintered bronze bearing may be sprayed with WD40
first if possibly stuck. Then you remove the clip from the bell and
remove it. You can pull out the capstan. See if it is OK at the
bearing surfaces and at the tape contact area (it should be finely
roughened).
Now you'd need a circlip pliers to remove the bearing circlip. There's
a fat chrome washer ring with a pin for the bell, a pair of spring
steel rings, a brass thrust ring coated with PTFE at one side and the
ball bearing itself. It may be in this order listed but again maybe it
may not (I'm writing this as remembered only).

Check this bearing and wash it if necessary. Usually a squirt of WD40
will do -- I think the grease in the bearing may be still OK.

Check the bronze front bearing and wash amply with the WD40 then oil
with a light(est) grade oil.

After reassembling, the motor may well be fine again.

If the capstan is bad, I think that B77 high speed (30 ips) capstans
would fit perfectly. It can be obtained from Revox. And really, did
they say "Go away"? -- It would be quite curious for me!
