HelP!!! When I record someone or a group I use my Tascam DA 78's with
my mackie 1604 VLZ Pro mixer. After tracking I can listen to the
recording by using the DA 78's with the Mackie Mixer to my Mackie HR
824 Monitors. Usually on playback things sound really good and full.
Another way I listen to, as well as edit the recording, is to use the
DA 78's with it's TDIF out's and digitally send it to my MOTU 2408 so
I can import it to my computer. Once in the computer, I send it back
out through the MOTU to the same Mackie HR824's.....but it sounds a lot
thinner and not as full of a sound. Any ideas why this is this way???
Nothing is as full a sound as it is when I just listen to the recording
through the mixer to the monitors???? Help! Thanks for any advice you
may have.

You've just described the main sonic difference between analog and digital
mixing.
Stick to your Mackie if you like that sound. I know I do. No digital mixer
ever worked for me, hardware or software.
I own two vintage analog consoles - Soundcraft Series Two and Gelf
Electronics and am currently trying to decide which one to keep. Both
british, late 70s, 24 inputs, 8 outputs, 8 track monitoring. They both sound
great, but totally different from each other. A tough choice.
There's nothing wrong with Mackies. I've had them all and still have and use
one.

The good news is that there's nothing wrong with your monitors.

Two things are different:
1. You are using different converters. Are the converters on the MOTU
as good as the ones on the DA 78s themselves? Maybe, I dunno. But if
they aren't, it will affect the sound.
2. The computer software is doing something. It's mixing the channels
together, sure. But what else is it doing? Is it bit for bit accurate?
It might not be.
