Looking for a new DVD drive. Mostly to watch movies, but doing some ripping too. Only thing I have heard is that a few people experianced their drives shattering cds. Is this something to worry about?

Look no further, get the Lite-on 16x/48x DVD drive which is very good and inexpensive. I using one now. The rippings are fast. It may be quite noisy when reading CDs, but not when playing DVD movies coz it is one of the few drives that plays DVDs at 1x speed. You hardly hear the drive is running.

cool, I like quiet (ive had my fill of monster fans and such).

Still the question of damaged cd's and dvd's...

this a major problem or just a fluke accident happening once in a while?

I haven't experienced any problem of shattering cds. I guess it might be caused by improper handling of cds or use of cheap cds. I'm not sure. Perhaps other Liteon owners can share your experience with us?

I believe it's the result of using cheap cds or already damaged cds with cracks in them.

a shame.

Regarding shattering disks, it can happen to any high speed optical drive if you insert a disk thats damaged enough.

Though anecdotal evidence suggests that cheap drives also contribute to disk explosion as they dont ahve very good disk balancing hardware.

The liteon is pretty good balancing the disks, so it should be no worse than any other high speed drive.

Just dont put mangled disks in.
