Hi,
Is it ok, to leave a laptop (toshiba) computer on for very long times (like 15 or so hours/day)? Does that hurt the computer in any way? You see, I used to only turn my computer on when I'm using it and then turn if off right after. But now I've been (and plan to continue for a few months) keeping it on all evening and night, to download stuff. Would that shorten the computer's life in any way?

Note: I have set power settings so that the computer always runs with highest cpu speed, it never goes into hibernation or standby and so that the hard disk never goes off. Also, cooling method is set to 'performance'.
Also, the computer will be downloading so I guess the hard disk will be working the whole time.

I would apreciate any feed back.
Thank you!!!

they do rate components to only last a certain ammount of time, but its a LONG time. i have an old p2 233 toshiba laptop that i havent turned off in i dont know how long. and my main computer never gets turned off.

my computer is so fast, it completes an endless loop in less than 4 seconds!

Hard disks, power supplies, fans, and floppy drives all run to 50,000 hours. CPUs and chipsets get into the hundreds of thousands of hours. Some things like LCD backlights, cd-rom burners etc. are only rated for 5,000 hours of continuous use.

It's up to you how quickly you use them up

You should not have problem with it. I have old Toshiba Pentium Laptop that I used for internet sharing. It work 24/7 over a year and still works fine.

It will auctaly lenghten the life of the CPU because you will not be getting near as much expansion and contraction between hot and cold. For everything else it will not make any difference that you will notice in your lifetime most likely. The only thing is the harddrive and it doesnt matter anyway because if you are turning it on and off all the time you have head touching the disk everytime you turn it off and that causes wear so that covers for any extra bearing wear you might have. Simple answer. Leaving it on all the time is auctaly better for the computer/laptop because you dont have all the expansion and contraction everywhere that you would have turning it on and off. In the worst case it is not going to make any difference to the life of it. BTW I also leave my laptop on 24/7 and have been doing so for the past 2 years and its perfectly fine.
