Provider "see" attached router

I am living and working in a facility that provides "wired" internet. They say that routers are not allowed, however I can see several wifi connections from my iphone. I would like to use my airport express mainly to sync my ipad, iphone and computer. Can the provider see that I am hardwired into a router vs a laptop? I realize that they can see the signal, but can they tell when I unplug from the laptop and plug in the router?

Yes, they can. Every device that connects to the internet has a "Mac Address" and they can tell who the manufacturer of that device is, and what kind of device it is.

Whether they will take the time to look at it is completely different though
