Windows XP x64 Upgrade

Hello,

I'm currently running Windows xp x64 and figure it's time for an OS upgrade. I'm not sure whether to get Windows 7 or 8. Could I use the 79.99 student upgrade version of Windows 8 to upgrade? Or does that not work with XP x64? If not I'll probably get Windows 7.
