im buying a 512 stick of pc2700(333mhz)ddr and im wondering if the faster cas latency makes a signicant differenc or does just sound nice, cas 2.5 is significantly cheaper

The general public will not notice the difference between cas 2.5 and 2.0. Heck, they won't notice the difference between 3.0 and 2.0. Some need lower cas timings to help with reliability issues in overclocking their hardware. Don't get me wrong, cas 2 is faster than cas 3, but for many people, you're really paying extra dollars for better numbers.

This is from the March 2003 issue of Maximum PC page 25.

CAS 1.5
3DMark2001se: 13,057
SYSMark2002: 246
Quake3 demo: 254fps
------------
CAS 2.0
3DMark2001se: 13,193
SYSMark2002: 249
Quake3 demo: 265fps
------------
CAS 3.0
3DMark2001se: 13,072
SYSMark2002: 244
Quake3 demo: 262fps

They blamed the lower scores for the CAS 1.5 setting on memory errors. The test setup is as follows:

P4S8x
P4 2.8
512mb Corsair PC2700
Radeon 9700pro
WinXP Pro w/ SP1
Quake demo was run at 1024x768@32-bit color
