Hello,
im trying to hook an antenna to my netgear wnda3100 is there a primary side for the antenna
hello. I do not believe that it matters for dual band if you use both connectors, and because the WiFi is dual band. As a matter of fact, you should use both because i believe the chipset uses antenna-diversity (separation of bands using a different antenna for each band) for Wireless-G and the other for Wireless-N.
it is possible to use antennae externally with this device as it has 2 internal connectors for a slightly different model. You probably already know this, but just in case... Opening the device **WILL** void the warranty, but if you don't care about that, then here's how to proceed. you can simply use wifi cables out of an old laptop. Yes, that's right. the connectors are the same and you need only to cut the ends leading to the screen side to attach a high gain antenna to both connectors. i suggest using mini-BNC or some other simple connector as its a very simple connector to install with no complication. also, it would fit in the wifi easily. you can take about 3/4 of wire from the wifi from the connector side and cut it. (again, at 3/4 or more, to give room for error and stripping of wires)
Next, you will need the following items:
Wire stripper (capable of 26 gauge)
28-gauge flux-less solder (NOT flux all, as it tends to run only in large gauges)
Flux
Soldering Iron (30-watt or higher, not exceeding 75-watts. we don't want to melt the wire itself, haha.)
Hot Glue Gun (to stabilize the connector from the inside of the USB adapter. we don't want it coming undone. :} )
