Search redirect problem.

I'm currently having an issue with search redirects. It happens in any browse I use(IE, Firefox, Chrome) and with Google and Bing. I ran full scans with Mbam, Avast, and SUPERAntiSpyware, they found minor issues that were taken care of, but I still have the redirect problem. My hosts file looks normal, as do all of my proxy settings. I'm running out of ideas on what to do with this. It's not a huge deal but it's super annoying when ever second search or so goes to some random advert site or search page.

More about search redirect problem
  1. reboot into safe mode then try scanning again. Also install Spybot from Safernetworking before you do and run that too
  2. also make sure your DNS server setting have not been altered
  3. I'll try Spybot, and my DNS settings haven't been changed.

run a hijackthis and post the log files. most time if it not malware.. try malwarebytes to see if it finds anything. (rerun everything in save mode. in case it a stealth virus or malware. most time these newer redirector are part of a program that will reload itself from start up. check to see what programes you have loaded and look for any weird search help or tools bars in windows. inteill you get the main program removed and the registry keys delted it going to reload it self every time you boot.
  5. Run Spybot search and destroy in safe mode and it should fix things up -- those redirect malwares are pretty common and are Malware rather than Virii so many anti virus scans will not find them but Spybot will usually remove them.

    Spybot Search and Destroy -- ( http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html )
  6. Ran Mbam and Spybot in safe mode- same problem still.
  7. just to state the obvious but you never know you did update them before doing the search?

Also what is the default search provider you are using?
  8. @jamesmcuk: They are up to date to my knowledge, and my default search is Google, but it does the same thing with Yahoo and Bing.

  13. James,

Can you take a look at my hijackthis log and see if anything jumps out at you? I am having the same problem listed above and malwarebytes removed a bunch of things and google worked good for about 15 minutes and went back to redirecting.

    Thanks,

    Also try:

Click START > RUN > then type "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"
Open the HOSTS file in Notepad
Delete all the lines of IP addresses in the text document except for "127.0.0.1 localhost".

If it still Persists you can try ComboFix but it can be a harsh tool if used improperly. Anyway its up to you if you want to try it, just back up anything important before you do. Some instructions on its use can be found on this thread http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/1058212-having-problems-opening-google-sites.html
